"A classic portrait of a man searching for his identity, along the way finding what it truly means to be free. Shot in stunning panoramic views and backed by a moving soundtrack by John Barry. A sorrowful love letter of farewell to the American frontier; it has the kind of vision and ambition that is rare in movies today."

"“My name is Dances With Wolves. I have nothing to say to you. You are not worth talking to.”
Dances with Wolves, released in 1990, directed by Kevin Costner and written by Michael Blake (OG Author of Book.) Watched on HBO Max. I watched the extended version. Which adds an hour onto it, making the film close to four hours long. I don’t know if what was added really adds anything to this film, but it certainly doesn’t detract.
Lt. John Dunbar is sent after an accidental victory to what seems to be an abandoned cabin on the western side of the U.S. during the Civil War. In hopes of holding it down for troops when they finally come by, But years pass, and no one comes, well no one of the army anyway. The Sioux tribe come, and pester him, and he ends up joining them. They befriend each other. And when the soldiers do come, he ends up fighting for the Sioux tribe.
I don’t know how to enjoy this film. I did enjoy watching it, and there was some fun and funny and emotional scenes in it. But it felt like a white savior narrative you know? Like only Kevin Costner could warn the Sioux tribe.
But also, that’s unfortunately how things were in Civil War days. So does it make it better? Like I feel it’s pretty respectable to the Sioux Tribe (And probably the book it’s based on, but I wouldn’t know that because I can’t read), but I’m not an expert. Or a Native American. I’m just a disabled white boy who likes movies and likes writing about them. This is just what I think. What do you all think? And do you prefer the extended or the original version?
Starring Kevin Costner as Lt. John Dunbar, Mary McDonnell as Stands With A Fist, and Rodney A. Grant as Wind in his Hair.
