"Honestly, I liked it better on the first watch. It doesn't quite survive a second.
Now I originally stuck with this show because it reminded of the many other shows that have a royal family hide away in some foreign area to avoid being found out. It brought a sense of nostalgia with the cliche. Honestly, that's how I got past all the cringe. It seems the Tales of Arcadia does thrive on cringe a lot, but EBelow takes the cake. It's trying to be heartfelt and sweet in so many moments but it's too much or not in the proper spot. You'll understand once you watch it.
Then there's the women empowerment. As a girl, it's far too much. It's basically jarring. What's worse, the show it's based off, did women empowerment rather well (Trollhunters). This one is not just shoving it in your face, they're jamming it down your throat. It's not sneaky or trying to be smooth with it. It's just excessive and so obvious it's not even funny. It's part of that extra cringe.
Onto the good parts. It's very original despite the cliches. The characters are energy based lifeforms as they point out, and I found the concept intriguing. It allowed for a more satisfying ending. Plus, the side characters have grown through Trollhunters, then get more depth here too. It's satisfying to see whether you've seen Trollhunters or not, since the characters aren't just surface based. They also do a great job of filling in those who haven't seen Trollhunters, but they will spoil it excessively just because you're seeing the 3rd season of TH play out in this 1st season.
Overall, the show is grata for those wanting more out of TH. And the story is entertaining. You'll find joy in it and be surprised every now and then. It's nowhere near perfect, but it is fun, and to get the entire Takes of Arcadia storyline, you'll watch through the cringe. I would suggest skipping certain episodes if you're gonna rewatch it. Like I said, it can be a bit much at times. Truly and utterly. Still, it's a fun ride."
