"3.5 stars

The Young elite: ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
The Rose Society: ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
The Midnight Star: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Average: 3.33

I enjoy this a little bit more than the first one. We get to see Adelina become a darker character. Her powers makes her go crazy. It is similar to mental illness. We learn new information that raises the stakes. There are a few new characters like Magiano (which is the thief with a heart of gold) and Sergio (the guy that we thought was killed).

Teren and Raffaele get their own POV chapters but I didn’t care about it too much. I mostly cared about Adelina because she had a lot more inner struggles. She was struggling with an inner darkness, which was more interesting.

There is a trope than many people don’t like. They did subvert it a bit and make there be limits.

I’m excited to read the next book. It didn’t exactly end on a cliff hanger but it gave you enough that you really want to see what happens next."
"My pleasure"

"I've got to admit that I was quite confused by this book. I loved it, don't get me wrong. But what exactly is Adelina's goal? Is it to rule, and if so, why? Now, perhaps every person on this Earth and reading this book besides me just instinctively wants to rule a country. But, honestly, why fix something that's not broken? After the prejudice against the malfettos is promised to come to an end, there's no reason to keep fighting. Perhaps this is my lack of ambition speaking, but why cause many more people to die in order to create a society that's only slightly different?

That aside, I still kind of liked this novel. Perhaps I should value the lack of reason a little more, but I really did like the character development in this book. While usually our main character going dark (and yet stronger) in the second book makes me want to throw a book at a wall and then yell, "WHY ARE YOU RUINING EVERYTHING WE HAVE WORKED SO HARD TO CREATE? WHY?!" , in this situation, as our little character runs around lying to people and keeping really, really pointless secrets and basically just trying to play big character and completely giving up all hope of being a good person, this time I could actually stand it. I actually enjoyed it.
(Until the very last few pages, until I actually did do the exact as I said above. That was going too far, Marie Lu.)
Okay. Back on track. Also, romance. I have to say, I hated </> the romance in the first novel. Nothing makes me more annoyed than a messed-up romance. Sure, she feels all sorts of butterflies, but she doesn't feel safe. She doesn't feel certain, or like the most amazing girl in the world. In this novel, however, we get to explore a little romance with someone else. I loved it. He's my new imaginary boyfriend. And he's waaayyy too good for her, but since this is a book, he's not going to realize he should run away screaming from this girl who pushes everyone away and coats them all in fear and pain to get what she wants. Instead he's going to sit in the corner and pout as she makes googly-eyes at honestly the most aggravating male love interest I have ever experienced in my life. It's sad when you know the main character actually deserves the horrible boy. But since I always imagine myself as the characters, if she doesn't end up with Mr. Dreamy, I will throw a book against a wall. Many books.

A little more about the killing; I've got to admit that Adelina really disturbed me. Like, really. Not only does she have this bloodthirsty need to rule, and only wants to do it through fear (someone should read the Hunger Games), but she also has this inane desire to kill. Which, as a human who could barely relate to her desire to sit on the throne and have all the pressure of running a freaking country, was not at all relatable. Yes, I know, we must bring our main character to the lowest point, which is usually where she betrays her friends and keeps secrets and lies. But our little anti-hero already did that, now didn't she? So what's there left to do? What's that, Marie Lu? You want to start killing off main characters at random, make our main character literally go insane (the three-hundredth side note - I didn't appreciate the schizophrenic side to her power - that was a little insensitive), and also bring back a dead character just so you can wreak more havoc? Make Adelina drive away Maggiano, the ONLY DECENT MAIN CHARACTER, and not even focus on the actual fun characters like Violet and Sergio? Keep our main character complaining over and over again and letting her anger fester rather than working through it? Taking out her anger at her father at her sister constantly?
..............
.....
..
.
.

No.
Just no. I'm still not even sure how all this happened.

Who decides these things?
Every reader knows that there's nothing more annoying than a second book that just kind of sits there as all the characters talk about what they ate for breakfast, but no one wants a second book that's basically just another first book, but ends like a third book. A horrible third book, actually, where the character's left all alone BUT DON'T WORRY BECAUSE SHE HAS HER CROWN.
I'm assuming, and after reading the Acknowledgements at the end of this book, I'm right: that she had to bring her to her very lowest point which considering her powers is very low blah blah blah blah blaaaahhhhhh. And, yes, second chances are important. So is redemption. But wouldn't it just be amazing if through all of this, our character stayed true to herself? If she stayed strong and stood by her new friends? Did what was right? At first I was like, oh yay, finally, a character who isn't afraid to make the hard choices: kill the bad guys, backstab. But then I realized, these aren't the hard choices, they're the easy ones. It's easy to see the other side as soldiers, and not as people with families and lives and emotions, and make the hard choice of not killing everyone you come across. It's actually really, really hard to tell the truth when you know it reflects badly on you. Yes, that makes you soft, but it also makes you strong. And that's why this wasn't a book where your main character learns to rise to the challenge, but rather one where she lost everything and yet thinks she gained everything.
"

THE YOUNG ELITES

Lo he dicho muchas veces :v

THE ROSE SOCIETY

Twitter || Blog || Pinterest || Tumblr || Instagram || Facebook"
"A few sentences sum up the entire book:
Adelina (the insane main character who has serious anger issues) thinks that revenge will solve all of her problems and get her what she wants. But instead, everything she loves is taken away from her and she has ginormous melt downs and hears whispers in her head. With her society of misfits (who are much cooler than her), she tries to defeat her old friends who are now her enemies, an entire guard of soldiers, and she tries to take an entire country as her reward for killing a whole wack of people and destroying the little she had in her miserable little life.

There you have it. One of the crappiest books I've ever read."
