When a Soviet submarine gets stuck on a sandbar off the coast of a New England island, its commander orders his second-in-command, Lieutenant Rozanov, to get them moving again before there is an international incident. Rozanov seeks assistance from the island locals, including the police chief and a vacationing television writer, while trying to allay their fears of a Communist invasion by claiming he and his crew are Norwegian sailors.

"A surprisingly funny movie of a Russian submarine crew running aground at Gloucester Island in the U.S. and the chaos that ensues afterward. Phenomenal comedic timing and script paired with committed performances from the cast including Carl Reiner, Eva Marie Saint, and most especially Alan Arkin (whose performance really makes this movie soar). Hard to believe this was Alan Arkin’s first ever major movie role and what a debut (and well deserved Best Actor Oscar nomination) it was for him! It wouldn’t surprise me if ANORA took some inspiration from this film, especially for the scene where Mikey Madison’s character is tied up, because both tonally and scene-wise, they play out very similarly. Without a doubt everybody should watch this."

"One of my top 10 comedies of all time. Small town USA believes they are being invaded… and they kinda are, but both sides are equally bumbling and adorable. Stellar cast. egermency everybody to get from street. "
