"Denzel Washington produced this incredibly well acted and well paced adaptation of the August Wilson play of the same name. I must interject that my family and I had the wonderful pleasure of seeing one of August Wilson's Century Cycle plays, "The Seven Guitars", which tells the unique story of different African American families in the post war 1940's, at a theater 🎭 in San Francisco decades ago. It was amazing. I wish I could have seen all 10 plays, which chronicle the African American experience and culture in different decades of the 20th century. The play THIS movie is based on is also part of the Century cycle. Watching this film made me feel like I was back in the theater, feeling all of the raw emotions of the characters, who speak of their family history, which intertwines in the Piano. 🎹 Samuel L. Jackson stars as Dosmer, Danielle Deadwyler stars as Berniece, and John David Washington stars as Boy Willie. There are so many excellent performances , and they all evoked strong emotions from me. Certainly, much of that has to do with me being African American, but I know that anyone watching this will be moved by the story. "
"This was a rather fantastic adaptation of the August Wilson play. Uniformly well acted and directed (along with solid editing, production values, and cinematography), this definitely had more of a cinematic feel compared to the other 2 August Wilson adaptations. Easily the standout aspect was the chemistry between the cast (with editing a close second), which was a key factor in making this film work (most of the cast appeared in the 2022 Broadway revival, which explains the natural chemistry). Danielle Deadwyler was the standout of the cast (deserves a nomination frankly), with very strong performances from John David Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, Ray Fisher, Corey Hawkins and more. A very powerful reminder of how an ensemble cast can really make or break a movie. A very promising directorial debut for Malcolm Washington (Denzel Washington’s younger son), and a very solid continuation of the series of August Wilson film adaptations (FENCES and MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM were the first 2 movies in that series), all of which are (and will be) produced by Denzel. Worth a watch for sure."
