"This movie is all style over substance. Visually it's appealing, but to say the story is lacking is an understatement. Milla Jovavich and Dave Bautista do an okay job in their respective roles. There is some good CGI, and the post-apocalyptic setting is impressive, nice work with shadow and light and some sepia tones, but beyond that there's not much else. The dialogue is atrocious, it seems robotic and lacks depth, almost as if it was written by AI. It tries to be this epic fantasy tale that is just a mashup of magic, gunslingers, religious zealots, an old decrepit overlord, a queen, and monsters that all feels forced. For a film that was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and the source material coming from George R.R. Martin this was a huge disappointment. 5/10"
"The guy who wrote and directed all the Resident Evil movies ended up marrying the star, Milla Jovovich. Every couple of years he makes a scifi action movie for her where she kicks ssa and looks super cool. How great is that? Like 2020’s Monster Hunter, which I loved. The critics hate him, especially here cause George R.R. Martin is the source material. It’s a total CGI fest and no acting awards are being handed out. But it’s fun and weird and dumb and very entertaining. Throw in Dave Bautista and I’m in every time. "
"A little confusing since it didn’t make a ton of sense. There is a witch and a shapeshifter that they don’t explain in this post-apocalyptic type environment. I did like that it wasn’t as straight forward as I initially thought. The witch has to grant several wishes from different people with the outcomes being in opposition of each other. That part of it does kind of work with a twist that plays out. Milla and Dave are action veterans so they do a decent enough job. Although a lot of the action is done in that jump cut style to cover up the fact that they couldn’t do whatever the fight choreography called for. Some of the creature designs were solid but the environments with the green screen looked bad. There is a lot of action but it’s not very satisfying. This is a below average mad max type clone that didn’t really do anything all that good. You can skip this one.
